The size can vary, even more if you want to make it for children. It is not difficult to make the changes. What you should remember is that yarn stretches over time. To make a la maille hat you will need 140-176 yards sport (#2) weight yarn, crochet hook that matches with the yarn, scissors, measuring tape, tapestry needle. Starting chain does not count as first stitch unless stated otherwise within the pattern. Hat size will be slightly smaller than head circumference, but the hat is very stretchy and should be fitted around the head.
